Electracy Paper- The Impact of Cultures Over Time

Social media and technology has become significantly more used over that last decade. People are sitting at the dinner table looking at there phones or are talking on the phone. Communication between people is becoming less and less and it is becoming more about what is on the TV or phone. Everyone is desiring for the latest gadget so they can be up to date with everyone else. Most things on Facebook, Twitter or any other sight is just useless and a waste of time. There are two other types of cultures, literate and oral cultures. A literate culture consists of science, methods, fact, true/false, abstract and theoretical, etc. An oral culture consists of religion, the church, faith, right/wrong, narrative/story, etc. An electracy culture consists of social media, Internet, Google, etc. I believe that the most beneficial culture is a literate culture. Today, there is becoming another culture we just call an Electrate culture. An electrate culture keeps people from communicating to one another, everything on the internet is not always true, and you cannot always rely on the website, phone or computer to work.
The world started out as an oral culture only basing things on what people told you and what you experience. According to a website online Oral culture is defined as this, “Oral tradition is information passed down by word of mouth that is not written down. This includes historical and cultural traditions, literature and law.”

Oral Traditions-
• Blowing out candles at birthdays
• Tipping a waiter for good service
• Throwing a bridal shower for a new bride
• Throwing a baby shower for a mother-to-be
• Having events for new members of a fraternity and sorority
• Storytelling

Oklahoma Indians
• Told stories to pass on news to generations
• Only thing they could do is write down the things they experienced for others to see later on.

After oral culture was the only way to communicate and discover history literate culture was the next big way of communication. According to a website, culture literacy is defined as “Knowledge of history, contributions, and perspectives of different cultural groups, including one’s own group, necessary for understanding of reading, writing, and other media.” A literate culture is more of what we have today and our time. I believe the literate culture is the best culture to me because people took knowledge and what your group believes and it is not so much about believing what is on social media.
Literate Culture
• Method
• Science
• Fact
• Reason
• True/False
The culture this generation is moving more and more into is an electrate culture. An electrate culture is one based on the Internet and other bases off the Internet. The electrate culture could be something like Google, or social media sites like Facebook or Twitter. People today get so caught up onto there Facebook or Instagram and seeing what their friends and other people are doing instead of focusing on the person you are with and having an actual face to face conversation. When I am with someone I try to talk with him or her and not look at my phone. The definition of an electrate culture to me is, “Basing your efforts off of whatever you can find on the internet and focusing on that not socializing with people.” Another example of an electrate culture could be watching TV. Not everything on the TV is true. You cannot just go to a certain channel and believe everything this singer said is true just because they are famous. You have to listen to what they have to say and go and search if what they said is actually true.
Electracy is going to essentially destroy our society. If we all turned to the internet, social media sites, or the television then nobody would need to talk to one another and there would be no point to life really because everyone has a website to communicate or they can text each other. Nowadays, there are websites that people can meet a spouse or have their own little group of friends just from being online. You never know if those people are exactly the age they tell you or if they could be a criminal, you just cant rely on every website. My grandma found her husband online and it turned out to be great but it is not always the case.
Electracy cannot always be useful to civilization because everything on the Internet is not always true. Websites such as Wikipedia people can go in and change things that are said about people and make it sound true but it is really false. Today, anyone can go in on a website and change things or add their own website or response on something. Also, on the television on the news people often either make up stories or twist some of the story to make it more interesting. If you read or hear something on the Internet you should go and do your own research on the topic so you can tell if what they are talking about is actually true and not twisted or fake.
Another way Electracy cannot always be useful is that you cannot always rely on the website or computer or phone to work when you need to get on it. An example of that is in Christ Culture class today our professor tried connecting his computer to the projector so that classmates could show a presentation. He tried for a good twenty minutes but it did not work and then he called the maintance guy a few times. The maintance guy then had to come fix it so that my classmates could present their work. We spent over half the class relying on this computer to work so that we could present a project but it didn’t work until the end. You cannot always rely on a certain computer to work just to prove a point or write a paper. If the computer does not work then be flexible and move on to using pen and paper and using your own knowledge.
One of the other reasons you cannot always rely on electracy is it keeps people from communicating to one another. Someone can easily take what you said to them wrong because you are telling them over text and not through talking in person. When I am with someone I stay off my phone and have conversations with people. I only get to spend a few hours with them so I want to have all the time to talk to them not just be on my phone the whole time. When my mom was a kid they did not have cell phones and the only way to communicate for them was to ride over to someone’s house to spend time with them and talk to each other. Today, people have to always stay up to date and have the latest gadget or latest biggest TV or whatever the newest phone is. The phones are great to communicate to people but people are just taking the use out of phones to another level. I think if we are to focus more on communication and talking to people phone companies should take away the access to the Internet and apps and just focus on calling and texting being available on the phones. I even found myself distracted from writing this paper by looking at Facebook. If people can have access to talking to a person they have never met across the world they should be able to communicate to the person that is sitting in there living room right next to them.

Examples of Elctracy
• Using phones to communicate
• Texting people instead of calling them
• Using Social Media sites to communicate to people you have never met
• Online dating, babysitting, pet sitting sites
I hope that soon the social media websites and the distraction of the phone will soon die down and become less and less distracting and people talking to each other more and more. I believe that the best way of communication and belief system was the literate culture. They could communicate well but also could add on to what they thought with someone else’s belief and could expand their knowledge.

My Future Mission’s Trip to Spain

If I were to go on a mission’s trip anywhere I would go…

If I were to go on a mission’s trip anywhere I would go to Spain. I picked Spain because Coach Dave Bintz and his wife were called to be missionaries at a camp there. The camp in Spain is called L’ Arcada. There are sports such as basketball, soccer; there is also archery, rock climbing, a swimming pool and more! Coach Bintz and his wife go up there and play basketball and spread the gospel to the people there.

L’ Arcada is a Christian foundation through families, through recreational education, they can bring the families together and minister to the kids about Christ. There is a variety of things to do so every child can enjoy. They have a children’s camp that is age’s seven to twelve and they have a youth camp that is ages 13-18. They both offer most of the same activities but they are just different ages. The camp is from June 23rd-29th.

I think I would like this mission’s trip because I love basketball and that would be a cool way to do something I like and spread God’s word. I also would like to minor in Spanish so it would be a good way to practice speaking Spanish. They have an English camp where you can go and learn to speak English better. They have for their outdoors course mountain bikes, hiking trails, ropes course, archery, climbing wall, water slide, bonfires, and even live music. For basketball they have a three on three, two ball, all star game, jam session, video sessions, dunk contests, exhibition games, daily clinics and training, leagues with playoff competition, and trained coaches and counselors.

I would go and be a counselor and minister to kids and play sports with them and cheer them on. In 1 Thessalonians 2:10 it says, “10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed.” This is a verse that I would use when I go there and minister to kids there. This verse is basically saying that we are witnesses like God and we should go out and spread the gospel.

Approximately ninety percent of Spain is catholic. Some websites say ninety four percent are Roman Catholic and the other six percent are other religions. In Matthew 28:19-20 it says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” This verse is saying that we are to go out and make disciples and baptize them and make them new in Christ.

My church quote is “Not just a place you go to but a place you go from.” This quote is saying that you don’t just go to church to go but you go to church then go out in the world and preach the gospel. “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God” said by William Carey. If you want to have a relationship with God then you have to pursue that relationship back with him so you can be strong in your faith. We have to correct our relationship with God before we can go out and spread the gospel to others.

In Leviticus 25:11 it says, “The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines.” If we go out and spread the gospel we will reap good things. John Piper said, ““Go, send, or disobey.” So if we go out and send and make disciples then we are obeying God.

A mission’s trip for some people can be like Jonah in the Bible. Jonah was told by God to go to the city of Nineveh and preach the gospel to the people there. When Jonah heard this he then refused and tried to run away to Tarshish so he went to Joppa and caught a boat there. The Lord then sent a great storm on the seas. The captain asked for Jonah to call on his God so that the storm will cease. The people on the boat were questioning who was responsible for all this chaos. Jonah then said it is me. Jonah told them to throw him overboard and the raging storm will stop. The people on the boat then threw Jonah overboard and the storm stopped. Jonah was then swallowed by a big fish. Jonah was in the fish for three days and three nights. Jonah prayed to God while in the fish and the Lord then commanded the fish to vomit Jonah onto dry land. The Lord then went to Jonah a second time to go to Nineveh. Jonah then obeyed and went to Nineveh and preached the gospel to the people there and changed their hearts and minds to God.

Just like Jonah we sometimes try to hide from God and run away from him. Although we do not want to do what he tells us at times we are to obey our Lord. People who feel called to be missionaries sometimes feel like Jonah at first but then they can turn that around for the better by saving others lives. In Matthew 4:19 it says, “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” This verse is saying that if we first go follow God and have faith then he will send us out to encourage people.

C.T. Studd said , “Christ wants not nibblers of the possible, but grabbers of the impossible.”
What he is saying there is that Christ does not want people who are just nibbling a little at the possible but people who are grabbing and begging for the impossible. I like this quote because when you minister to people who have nothing they are grabbing at what we are telling them about God. To me if I went to Spain it would be cool to see these kids who have nothing so happy about us coming to preach to them about God. I love to see people happy so I would love to let them know that we not only live once but we live eternally with God!!

Hudson Taylor said, “God isn’t looking for people of great faith, but for individuals ready to follow Him. “ What he is saying is that if you are a new believer he doesn’t need people of strong faith but people who are ready for a journey to follow God. People in Spain who accept Christ is new believers aren’t that strong in their faith but they are willing to follow God. Robert Speer said, “Prepare for the worst, expect the best, and take what comes.” This quote is saying that you are to expect the best but also prepare for the worst but just take whatever comes at you.

John Piper said, “To belong to Jesus is to embrace the nations with Him.” What John Piper is saying here is if we are going to belong to God we have to embrace the world with God’s word. I think Spain would be a good place to go to spread God’s word and to create a strong relationship with others. I know God has a special plan for my life and I would hope I would embrace the plan he has for me. God says to go out and be the shining light for him and to proclaim his goodness, so I can’t wait to be a part of something great!

God’s Purpose For My Life- By: Sadie Hudson

Have you ever thought that you just go through the motions and that God doesn’t have a purpose for you? You might think that God doesn’t have a special plan for you but actually He always had a plan and a purpose for you even before you were born. Some people may feel that they are just doing their job day by day and there is no purpose in life. I think that if God took the time to create us differently then He has a purpose for us to be successful. One of God’s main purpose’s for us is to bring more people to Christ so we can bring more people to living eternally.

I have always grown up in a Christian home but I never accepted Christ till I was about 12. I went to the doctor about two and a half years ago and they told me I had to have brain surgery. I was trying to do everything to get out of not having it. I wondered why God had that plan for me. I knew a ton of people were praying for me but I still wondered why this news had to be told to me. The day of the surgery I had a peace that God gave me and I wasn’t afraid. After the surgery, a ton of people came and visited and that helped distract me. The surgery ended up helping me as an example later. A few months ago my friend had to have brain surgery and after I came and could help them be a good example of what they were going through.

I know God has a specific purpose and plan for my life but I am not sure what it is yet. I plan to finish high school at Odessa Christian School. I also plan to go to college and major in Sports Medicine. I know a lot of people around this time in their life get into fights, do drugs, smoke, etc. but I plan to keep my body clean and have God use me for a special purpose. I know that God knows my heart and that I care for people and I can use my gift of caring to help people in sports. Since I would like to major in Sports Medicine then I can use that to minister to other people and that could be one of God’s purpose.

Exodus 9:16 says, “But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” From the moment you were born God has a specific purpose for your life. In the Bible it says that God raised us up with a purpose so we can proclaim his word to people we talk to. In Proverbs 19:21 it says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. “ If we have plans for that day and you sense God wants you to stop then you should stop your plan and do what God tells you.

Would if your grandpa was on his death bed and he wasn’t a Christian and he died before you told him about Christ. You could have been at the mall with a friend and God told you to go see your grandpa and minister to him but you ignore it and he dies. You would be devastated for the rest of your life because your grandpa died without knowing God. That’s like how God feels if we ignore his plans and then he punishes us by having something bad happen. No matter what we have planned we need to cancel ours and do what God says!

Why I Believe In Christ By Sadie Hudson

Why does someone simply have faith for someone they don’t see? I believe in a God where you have to have a continuing relationship with him. I believe in Christ because he went through the pain he did to die on the cross for our sins. I also believe in Christ because he is the king of all kings. I like how out of all the kings in the world he is above all of them. God is our foundation for life. Would you like to have a bumpy foundation or a solid foundation? I would prefer a solid foundation for my relationship with Christ.

Genesis 1:26 says, “26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”  I believe in Christ because he took the time to form us in his image.  He made the world and everything in it in six days.  If you look around God didn’t just make all this on accident. He made everything with a purpose.

I grew up going to church since I was a baby. I went to VBS when I was 5 and I accepted Christ as my Savior but I wasn’t old enough to really know the meaning of it. When I was about 12 years old I was at a summer camp and Pastor James, my youth pastor, was preaching I felt the presence of God. Through the worship and God’s word my friend and I accepted Christ. After that moment I felt renewed in Christ. I was then baptized in September of the next year and I was cleansed by God.

John 8:12 says, ‘When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” In the God tells us that we need to be the light to people who are in a dark moment.  We are called to be an encouragement to others even if we are in a rough place.  I had brain surgery two years ago and my friend who is six had brain surgery before for the same thing as me and he saw me and told me how well he is. He was a good goal for me to know that I will get though that. I still get migraines but I am praying that they will be gone soon. My friend Andrew had brain surgery a few months ago so I was a good example to his family that he will get through this.

In James 2:14 it says, “14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?” James 2:14  is saying is that if you have faith and don’t do good deeds then you are nothing. The way you get to heaven though is not by just works but you also have to have faith in God believing his word. In John 5:19 it says, “19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”  So we have to have faith in God to get to heaven.
